Lesson: Understanding basic clothing design

The two areas of the body that consider size ratio is the upper body and the lower body.

-Rule of third

For a triangle shape body, their shoulders will be narrow and have a much wider hips.

For a rectangle shape body, they will have the same width on their shoulders, waist and hips.

When you choose a piece of clothing, lines on the garment can make an illusion of your body shape.

If your clothing has vertical lines as a pattern, it  leads the eyes up and down and showing height and less width. So for example, a pinstripe suit will make Daryl looks even taller.

If your clothing has horizontal lines as a pattern, it leads the eyes side to side and showing width rather than height. If a person is a bit chubby, then this is not the pattern you would like to choose.

Clothing with stretchy knit fabric goes with the body figure as it literally wraps around the body.

Bell shape creates illusion by both horizontal and diagonal lines much like an hourglass shape.

Space contributes to the visual effects of the garment.

There's two types of balance, it's symmetrical and Asymmetrical.

Symmetrical clothing shows good balance and looks more formal and tailored.

On the other hand, asymmetrical clothing makes it very unique in design and pleasing in general.

Proportion describes how seperate part of a garment related to each other and to the whole in size.

Each body type is different so you have to consider personal size a  factor. Sometimes certain styles may not look good on specific size.

Emphasis on clothing is important as it is something that catches your attention. It may be the colour or design, it certainly make an outfit looks more interesting and unique.

Rhythm is another element of design that contirbutes a lot to clothing.

For repetition , it's mainly pattern repeats, rows of stripes.

Radiation, it's lines or patterns shows from a certain area. For example, think of the sunrays around the sun. All of it comes from within

Gradation means patterns changes gradually, changes of size or color. Could be a bigger circle turns into medium ones and fades into a small one. Or colour changes from a darker hue to a lighter hue.
